Missile Base Deployments: Impact on Military Children

Abstract

The effects of a parent's combat deployment on their children are well studied. Children seen in military clinics often present with sleep disturbance, somatic complaints, adverse behaviors, and school difficulties. It has been re ported that these problems are exacerbated with combat zone deployments but it is unknown if this is generalizable to peacetime operations such as the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile mission. There is a gap in the literature comparing combat deployments with peacetime deployments, especially as perceived by the child . This qualitative study aimed to examine the phenomenon of frequent separation from parent(s) as perceived by military children of deployed parents. Our purpose is to report our findings as well as describe recruitment barriers within this population .
