Phospholipids as Biomarkers for Excessive Alcohol Use
Abstract
Our proposal is to determine whether a panel of phospholipids, sphingomyelin (SM) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), can be used as the markers for excessive alcohol use (EAU). The central objective of this proposal is to determine the diagnostic values of SM and LPC as the potential biomarkers for EAU. The study was conducted to determine the relationship between the serum levels of SM and LPC and the amount of alcohol consumption during the past month. The proposal has both scientific and practical significance in accordance with the research mission of the DOD in the area of drug and alcohol use.
