A Strategy To Increase United States Air Force Fighter Pilot Retention And Morale: Legendary Ace Robin Olds On The Silver Screen

Abstract

The United States Air Force currently faces several complex and compounding challenges. To address these issues the Air Force requires a significant increase in funding and a shift in resource prioritization, both of which will take a considerable amount of time. These challenges have manifested in reduced warfighter readiness which has resulted in low morale and reduced fighter pilot retention. As a potential short-term and low-cost solution to increase fighter pilot morale, the Air Force should consider approaching the motion picture industry to produce a film about the life of Legendary Ace Robin Olds. This approach could capture his heroic efforts and the Air Forces warrior spirit providing inspiration to generations of air warriors. The Air Force has a history of teaming with Hollywood during times of crisis such as in WWII and the Cold War. Current conditions do not allow quick solutions and therefore a minimal cost option must be investigated. Teaming with film producers is a valid way to promote the history of the Air Force, shaping a positive public image, and celebrating a heroic and iconic Air Force hero. Joseph Campbell's monomyth formula is well suited for the heroic life of Robin Olds. The result could be a viable stop-gap in low morale and retention until budgets stabilize and readiness rates improve.
