Identification of Alternatives to Reduce Shoaling in the Lower Matagorda Ship Channel, Texas

Abstract

The purpose of this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Regional Sediment Management Technical Note (RSM-TN) is to document the development of a regional sediment budget and to investigate design alternatives to reduce shoaling in the lower Matagorda Ship Channel (MSC). This RSM-TN focuses on the MSC between channel Station 10+000 and Station 60+000 as well as the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) immediately adjacent to the MSC where the two waterways intersect (Figure 1). Placement Areas (PAs) 6 through 10 are within the focus area. During the genesis of this study, researchers predicted that these PAs were contributing to the shoaling issue in the focus area. The goal of this study is to identify alternatives that will reduce shoaling in the focus area and increase intervals between required maintenance dredging.
