Abstract

The Department of Defenses (DoDs) medical mission is to enhance DoD and our Nation's security by providing health support for the full range of military operations and sustaining the health of all those entrusted to our care.1 The Military Health System (MHS), one of the Nations largest and most complex health care systems, carries out this medical mission. The MHS is a unique network of health professionals providing health care delivery services to approximately 9.4 million beneficiaries, including Service members, dependents, and retirees.2The MHS also performs other activities, such as medical education, public health services, and medical research and development,3 which are critical for enhancing the proficiency of its providers, maintaining the health of its beneficiaries, and advancing the science of health care.
