Measuring Turbulence Mixing in Indonesian Seas Using Microstructure EM-APEX Floats

Abstract

We developed scientific plans for collaborative observational programs with Indonesian,Taiwanese, and Japanese researchers. We worked with Taiwanese and Japanese researchers to plan and execute turbulence experiments using autonomous platforms in the SCS and Kuroshio Current. Our primary platform to measure turbulence mixing is the EM-APEX float equipped with a FP07 fast temperature sensor. The EM-APEX float is an autonomous vertical profiling platform that measures temperature, salinity, density, pressure, horizontal current, and turbulent thermal diffusion rate. EM-APEX floats have taken quality measurements in prior ONRDRI experiments. In November 2016, an EM-APEX float experiment was conducted using the Taiwanese R/V Ocean Researcher 3 in the Kuroshio loop current in the SCS. We established a memorandum of understanding and letter of agreement between Bogor Agricultural University and the Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington. We are working closely with Japanese collaborators to develop a turbulence observation program in Tokara Strait, where strong turbulence mixing resulted from the Kuroshio interacting with seamount was observed.
