Grain Refinement of Steels through Solidification Modification

Abstract

The goal of the project is to examine and understand the effect of NbO additions in refining the grain slze of steels and the effect of rare earth additions in alloy steels. The specific objectives are as follows: Build an understanding of the underlying mechanism of NbO based grain refinement. Document structure property relations Jn several material conditions for NbO refined steels. Expand the current understanding of rare earth based grain refinement by examining their influence on alloy steels. Document structure property relations in several material conditions for rare earth refined alloy steels.
