Low-Cost In-Fill Installation for High-Energy-Saving, Dynamic Windows

Abstract

As an addition to previous related ESTCP contract, View proposes to demonstrate an innovative, pre-commercial product and installation process for dynamic windows, called Dynamic In-Fill. A Dynamic In-Fill system is one where a dual-pane insulated glass unit (IGU) is mounted to the inside of the existing window and frame, without removing the original windows (see figure 1A). This approach cuts the total cost of a dynamic window upgrade by 2x, while maintaining most of the energy-savings, peak-load reduction and lifecycle benefits of a traditional dynamic window retrofit. In fact, the cost of a Dynamic In-Fill installation will be less than traditional window retrofits with standard low-e glass.
