The Role of Welding in Brittle Fracture

Abstract

The welding engineer concerned with the design and fabrication of modern structures cannot avoid recognition that he is deeply involved in the brittle fracture predicament. He soon realizes that his problem is particularly severe because, while there is too little known about the fundamental aspects of brittle behavior in metals, he is expected to apply all of the knowledge that is available to obviate difficulties in a region consisting of a gradient of constantly changing metallurgical structures.
