Preliminary Study of Electronic Replacement Compasses for the Army
Abstract
The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Adelphi, MD, along with the U.S. Army Test Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Activity of Fort Belvoir, VA, has studied electronic replacements for the standard issue lensatic compass. We studied the KVH Data Scope, the KVH C-100 compass engine, and the Casio Pathfinder digital watch/compass. Several tests were run on each compass to determine its suitability as a replacement for the lensatic compass. We conclude that an electronic compass will be more accurate and useful for the soldier.
