Beta Blockers for the Prevention of Acute Exacerbations of COPD

Abstract

We are conducting a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to definitively assess the impact of metoprolol succinate on the rate and severity of COPD exacerbations. The trial will enroll 1028 patients with at least moderately severe COPD over a 3-year period. Major activities for this reporting period have centered on recruiting and enrollment at clinical sites, launching recruitment advertising campaigns locally and utilizing the COPD Foundation, and the addition of new clinical sites to remediate recruitment lag including regulatory approvals, training, and site initiation. The monthly enrollment goal is 28.5 across all sites, with each site enrolling an average of 2-3 participants per month. Some sites have met and exceeded this goal overall while others are underperforming. At the time of this report 242 subjects have been randomized.
