Abstract

The special relationship between the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR and the Czechoslovak People's Army (CSLA) are, paradoxically may also seem to elucidate most in the West perspective: The Federal Republic of Germany - that is, the country which is likely to become the central and decisive battlefield of a war between East and West would - bordered on two member states of the Warsaw Pact: the Germans Democratic Republic(GDR) and the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (CSSR). This was by far the longest line of direct confrontation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Warsaw Contract Organization (WVO) 1, the largest military alliances in world history. The anticipated front run would be in a passage of associations of WYO through Lower Austria still around the federal German-Austrian border between Passau and Berchtesgaden has been extended. From the west, this resulted a comprehensive threat scenario for the geographically north-south direction long stretched Federal Republic.
