In Defense of Japan

Abstract

In October 2017 Prime Minister Abe and his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won a super majority in national elections. The party majority gives Abe the potential to formally amend Article 9 of the Japanese constitution to authorize the Japanese Self Defense Forces and CSD. Amending Article 9 will further complicate Japans atonement efforts for atrocities committed by Japanese forces during World War II. This dynamic environment highlights the importance of the United States regional alliances and the relationships of regional powers in the Pacific.
