A Study of Human Reliance on Imperfect Automation

Abstract

Appropriate trust in human-machine teams is critical in ensuring proper utilization of automation. Without appropriate trust, human operators may disuse or misuse automation resulting in loss of capability, efficiency, and safety. Designing automation that ensures appropriate trust proves to be a dificult problem, as it requires a means to measure and calibrate trust. The goal of this research intends to investigate trust calibration by examining the relationship between human reliance in automation and automation with varying reliability.
