Physical Layer Defenses Against Primary User Emulation Attacks
Abstract
Current Cognitive Radio spectrum sensing research efforts tend to focus on the development of new mechanisms to detect Primary User or improve existing ones. However, previous researchers have identified that a Primary User Emulation Attack can disrupt the operation of a CR system by significantly reducing the spectrum available to unlicensed users. This dissertation presents three methods to counteract PUEAs: Radio Frequency Distinct Native Attribute, Constellation-Based Distinct Native Attribute, and signal watermarking. RF-DNA fingerprinting extract identifying features from Radio Frequency signals using a Region of Interest that remains constant for all transmissions such as preambles, midambles, pilot tones, etc. CB-DNA fingerprinting uniquely identifies emissions from a radio by computing statistical features of the received signal projected into a constellation space. Finally, the signal watermarking method establishes a side-channel that enables the exchange of a Hash Based Message Authentication Code that authenticates the source of a signal.
