Land Cover Influence on Airborne Noise Propagation at USAF Installations
Abstract
The current USAF Noisemap modeling tool does not consider the effects of varying land cover for a given region when computing sound propagation of predicting aircraft noise pollution. The model assumes a grass land cover to reduce computational difficulties and man-hours. We hypothesize that n receiver can significantly vary with land use and land cover changes. Multiple scenarios were set up using four types of land cover maps. Moody AFB selected as case a study. Analyses showed that changing land cover of aircraft runway and flightline to hard surfaces in the model led to significant inc sampled locations in comparison to the standard grass-only cover. No significant difference was observed for other scenarios when compared to the gr reduced to only encompass the interior of the base. In conclusion, the current noise modeling practices using Grass-Only cover may not be affected by scenarios that showed differences warrant further analysis with other scenarios.
