Dissolution of NTO, DNAN and Insensitive Munitions Formulations and Their Fates in Soils

Abstract

New explosive compounds that are less sensitive to shock and high temperatures are being used as replacements for TNT and ROX. Two of these explosives, ONAN (2,4-dinitroanisole) and NTO (3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one), were shown to have good detonation characteristics and are used as the main ingredients in several new explosive formulations. Both compounds, however, are more soluble than either TNT or ROX and have been shown to have some human and environmental toxicity. This project measured the dissolution, photodegradation, and soil adsorption properties of DNAN, NTO, and insensitive munitions formulations that contain them (IMX-101, IMX-104, and PAX-21).
