Accession and Retention of Minorities: Implications for the Future

Abstract

Despite a significant increase in the numbers and proportions of minorities and women entering the military during the last two decades, little effort has been made to assess the implications of this trend for the future combat readiness of the nation. Using data from the Department of Defense, this article attempts to fill this gap by, first, analyzing the accession and retention patterns of these groups over the past 20 years in terms of their reward and punishment experiences.
