Efficiency And Precision Experimentation For Augmented Reality Cued Maintenance Action

Abstract

The Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial industry expend significant resources to recoverfrom failed maintenance actions. One known factor is the strained communication link connecting designersto maintenance professionals. Current technology leverages the technical manual, in both paper and flatelectronic form, for this link. Augmented reality (AR) offers the potential to mitigate this deleterious factorby maintaining or transforming information into a more palatable form. This research measured humanprecision and efficiency by comparing augmented reality cued (ARC) and traditionally cued (TC)maintenance procedures in five tasks designed to elicit absolute, cumulative, absolute referential, andcomplexity errors across both ARC and TC conditions. Results indicate ARC procedures are statisticallymore efficient for human precise placement tasks of small parts, while precision is roughly equal. Theassembly task, analogous to an assembly procedure, is statistically both more efficient and more preciseusing ARC versus TC procedures. ARC procedures for small part placement and assembly tasks are moreefficient, faster, and in most cases at least as precise.
