Investigating a Linked Open Data Model for Unmanned System Research and Development Portfolio Management

Abstract

The Office of the Secretary of Defense Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise tasked the Naval Postgraduate School to perform research exploring (1) enhancement of robotics education; (2) improved representation of robotic systems in combat simulations; and (3) interoperability standards for military robotics systems. As part of this work, NPS investigated the application of state-of-the-art information modeling techniques to create a conceptual and technical knowledge representation of unmanned systems architectures, research activities, development efforts, and operational employment to help better understand unmanned systems and the breadth and coverage of DoD research, development, and education projects. The chosen approach leverages Semantic Web technologies as demonstrated by the Linking Open Data project activities being performed on the World Wide Web. This report provides an introduction to the technical approach and lays out a plan of action for creating the desired knowledge representation and for populating the resulting model with data from Department of Defense unmanned system programs.
