Magnetically enhanced electrospray from ferrofluids

Abstract

The performance of a single tip ionic liquid ferrofluid electrospray source was estimated. The electrospray source was sprayed until the fluid reservoir was depleted (typically 15 to 18hours) with a magnetic field strength ranging from 320 to 500 G. While emitting, the angular divergence of the spray was measured, which yielded an average angular power efficiency of 94 percent. The mass-flow rate was also approximate via time lapse imagery taken of the fluid meniscus allowing propulsion parameters to be derived.
