Envelope Expansion Lessons Learned

Abstract

This handbook documents recurring issues and best practices that have been observed during the air vehicle envelope expansion phase on multiple USAF flight test projects over at least three decades. Recommendations are made on methods that have been used to alleviate the negative impacts of each issue and emphasize the positive aspects of the best practices. These lessons are the result of a collaboration of more than a dozen flight test engineers all highly experienced with envelope expansion. There was no attempt to capture lessons learned from the mission systems(avionics, electronic warfare, etc.), or sustainment portions of flight test projects although several of the lessons would also be applicable.
