Reference Models for Multi-Layer Tissue Structures
Abstract
The aims of this work are i) to establish an online platform to curate, distribute, and reuse data and models of multi-layer tissue structures of musculoskeletal extremities, ii) to collect and disseminate anatomical and mechanical data for building and validating reference models, iii) to build, validate, and disseminate mechanically advanced reference models representative of nonlinear material properties and realistic anatomy, and iv) to build and evaluate fast and mechanically simplified yet visually and haptically realistic surrogate models to be used for surgical simulation. At the time when this report was written, a web based data management system was fully operational; in vivo testing data were published; in vitro testing data dissemination has evolved; a multiplicity of models were built; and work on a variety of scholarly publications has progressed. The project continues to provide the foundations for development of authentic and individualized models for simulation of haptics of musculoskeletal extremities for training.
