Use of a High-Resolution WRF-ARW Ensemble to Provide Short-Range Guidance for a Complex Mixed Precipitation Event Near the Washington, DC, Area: Experimental Design

Abstract

Using the Advanced Research version of the Weather Research and Forecast model, an ensemble of short-range weather forecasts were generated for a challenging winter precipitation forecast event near Washington, DC, on February 9, 2016. The motivation and design for this study case are explained, and initial results exploring 6-h precipitation forecasts are examined. Further verification work and plans for a follow-up paper are also discussed.
