Targeting Histone Deacetylase in Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis - From Mice to Patients

Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of valproic acid on a mouse model of proteinuric kidney disease and to examine several large human databases for protective signals of valproic acid among patients with and without proteinuria in terms of long-term kidney function. Over the reporting period, we have elucidated several mechanisms that may explain the observed benefit of VPA in mice and have confirmed a significant reduction in therate of kidney function decline among humans being treated with valproic acid. These finding have been submitted to a major medical journal and are currently in peer-review.
