Experimental Determination of Physical Properties of 1-Propyl-2-Nitroguanidine (PrNQ)

Abstract

Chemical characterization of 1-propyl-2-nitroguanidine (PrNQ) was performed. Spectra (UV, Fourier transform IR, Raman) are presented along with results of elemental analysis, pH, and thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis and ambient and high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry). Based on determination of PrNQs solubility, Kow, Koc, vapor pressure, and observed hydrolytic stability in neutral water, it was concluded that it will be highly mobile and persistent in ground water. PrNQs low vapor pressure (HMX < PrNQ < RDX) in combination with its melting temperature (~100 degC) makes it an attractive candidate for melt-cast formulations.
