Evaluation of Aeronautical Design Standard - 33 Using a UH-60A Black Hawk

Abstract

A flight test assessment of Aeronautical Design Standard33 (ADS-33D-PRF) was conducted using a UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter. Eighty hours of flight tests were performed to assess the required compliance testing and evaluate the rotorcraft handling qualities criteria in ADS-33D-PRF in a good visual environment. Quantitative tests were performed for two aircraft loading configurations at hover and at forward flight. Formal handling qualities evaluations were conducted in three aircraft configurations, including that with an external slung load. Comparisons of predicted (quantitative) and assigned (qualitative) handling qualities are discussed. Lessons learned are given and recommendations are provided for future flight testing. Future areas of investigation and proposed updates to ADS-33 are discussed.
