Development of a Depository of Fast and Reliable Detection Methods for Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Pathogens (Elaboration d'un catalogue de methods rapides et fiables de detection des agents pathogenes zoonotiques et transmis par vecteur)

Abstract

In the context of One Health, interest in new and (re)emerging zoonotic and vector-borne diseases is increasing among the interdisciplinary fields of human and veterinary medicine. The potential of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases to impact the mission or to have increased virulence in populations lacking immunity make them of significant concern to military forces. Infectious diseases acquired in the operation zone continue to account for more military clinical encounters than battlefield injuries. In addition, distinguishing naturally occurring outbreaks of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases from intentional biologic attack is of concern. Concerted action for detection and surveillance, and subsequent dissemination of data and information between NATO partners is thus of importance. Moreover, decision makers are in need of tools to prioritize the pathogens of importance to military operations. A NATO working group to address these issues was established in 2012. Members from Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey and the United States worked together until Spring 2016 to identify priority zoonotic and vector-borne pathogens, and to compile a consolidated list of fast and reliable detection methods for each of these pathogens, divided into first line methods not needing a high-tech environment and second line methods'. This report includes the products developed by the group as well as a discussion of the findings, knowledge gaps and a recommended way forward.
