Mary Edwards Walker: The Only Woman Awarded the Medal of Honor

Abstract

Dr. Mary E. Walker (1832-1919) is the first woman to be appointed as the U.S. Army assistant surgeon, and the only woman to have received the Medal of Honor, the nations highest award for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.
