High-Resolution Observations in the Gulf Stream using Autonomous Underwater Gliders

Abstract

The purpose of this grant was to conduct two Spray glider surveys of the Gulf Stream between Miami, FL and New England, building on similar previously conducted surveys. Analyses of the resulting observations focused 1) on internal waves and bottom mixing that result from the strong Gulf Stream flow impinging upon relatively shallow topography, 2) the impact of the observations in a Navy operational forecast model, and 3) impacts of hurricanes on the Gulf Stream.
