Effect of Using Stabilized VX on Measurement of Agent Retention and Decontamination Performance for Materials

Abstract

There is a need to understand and predict how decontamination technologies will work on real assets in the field when contaminated with actual chemical weapons (i.e., not refined laboratory grade agents). The overall objective of this work was to determine the degree to which chemical agent standard analytical reference material (CASARM) 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl-O-ethyl methylphosphonothioate (VX), with the addition of the stabilizer N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide and possibly sulfur, impacted the measurement of decontaminant performance in chemical warfare agent research studies. By assessing the influence of chemical stabilizers in decontamination evaluation results for CASARM VX, it is possible to have a more accurate determination of potential hazards for personnel that interact with decontaminated materials in the field.
