Plutonium Exposures to Personnel Assigned to Johnston Atoll

Abstract

Johnston Atoll supported U.S. atmospheric nuclear weapons testing under Operations Hardtack I and Dominic I. The most significant incident occurring during these Operations impacting the Atoll was Thor missile launch mishap of Bluegill Prime (25 July 1962) under Dominic I. The mishap involved the dispersal of weapons grade plutonium, which was largely mitigated shortly after the accident. The persistence of low-level residuals created exposure potential for individuals working in the Thor missile launch emplacement and other areas on the Island. The purpose of this report is to document potential dose from these exposures. Estimated doses were low and not expected to be a health hazard to individuals.
