Boeing Michigan Aeronautical Research Center (BOMARC), Final Remedial Action Report for Site RW-01, Mc Guire AFB, N.J.
Abstract
On 7 June 1960, the Air Force experienced an accident with a nuclear-tipped, liquid-fueled BOMARC missile at McGuire AFB, NJ. The fire and subsequent fire-fighting activities aided the spread of weapons grade plutonium and other radiological contaminants over the site. Shortly after the accident concrete and asphalt caps were place over the most highly contaminated soil and pavement areas. Remedial actions were initiated by a 1992 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS), consistent with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. A Record of Decision was published to pursue excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated wastes that exceeded plutonium activity concentrations of 8 pCi/g. Remedial actions on primary contaminated areas were completed between 2002 and 2004, while secondary contaminated areas were remediated between 2005 and 2009. About 22,000 cubic yards of soil and debris were removed, transported, and disposed at a NRC-regulated disposal site in Clive, UT. Final status surveys demonstrated that the site is acceptable for unrestricted use.
