Fuel Efficient Gear Oil - Part 5

Abstract

The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center (TARDEC) continued work and testing on the stationary axle efficiency test stand to determine the effect of Fuel Efficient Gear Oils (FEGO) on vehicle fuel economy. A Federal Test Method (FTM) was finalized and fifteen candidate tests were performed, following the finalized FTM procedure. The FTM procedure results show good differentiation in efficiency between different axle lubricants of similar viscosities. The reference runs show consistent, repeatable results. The low torque conditions of the efficiency tests show the greatest amount of efficiency improvement. The low viscosity fluids showed the greatest overall efficiency values, suggesting that fuel economy would increase with decreased lubricant viscosity.
