2018 Human Variability Workshop: Insights to Drive Scientific Innovations for Human State Detection and Prediction

Abstract

The US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) executes a multidisciplinary research program to overcome existing limitations in technology that arise from brittle, hard-coded algorithms that cannot adapt to the dynamic demands of users. Under The Human Variability Project, researchers design novel approaches for noninvasive and unobtrusive longitudinal measurement of human performance while concurrently advancing analytic approaches that will enable real-time adaptive technology. ARL researchers hosted a Human Variability Workshop to ensure the employed approaches are both leveraging and advancing the current state of the art. In this two-day workshop, multidisciplinary experts, both internal and external to ARL, gathered to discuss a vision for future experimental and analytical approaches designed to achieve the projects high-risk and ambitious scientific goals. This report summarizes the core scientific vision of The Human Variability Project and how the workshop was designed to augment ongoing and future research plans. The first two sections summarize the scope of the program and execution plan for the workshop, while the bulk of the report summarizes the core scientific themes that emerged from the series of talks, panels, and breakout sessions at the workshop. Finally, the report discusses the core recommendations and future directions for the program, including appendices with output from the brainstorming sessions.
