Surface and Interfacial Influences on the Bulk Mechanical Responses of Composite Materials

Abstract

This report details preliminary results for an effort investigating the relationship between a materials chemical and physical properties. Refinement of new characterization techniques (room temperature inverse gas chromatography of polymer composites and stress and strain curves of single bead inclusion with digital image correlation) are presented. An alternate method to compare surface energy measurement by contact angle goniometry and inverse gas chromatography is detailed. New computational techniques using cohesion zone modeling are detailed. Initial surface and mechanical results of Sylgard 184 and hollow glass beads are considered including initial plans on surface modification to improve modeling efforts are included. Additional research and results are included in the year two and final reports for this effort.
