A Flying Qualities and Handling Qualities Evaluation of L1

Abstract

Presentation will cover the background of flight controls and highlight historical examples of various types of system failures. This provides the motivation for fault-tolerant adaptive control technology which has the potential to improve flight safety by providing predictable flying and handling qualities in the presence of control system failures and/or vehicle damage. There is a brief description of L1 adaptive control theory and how it was implemented in the Variable Stability System of the Calspan Learjet. The overall objectives, methodology, test results, and conclusions of the L1 Adaptive Control flight test are presented.
