Environmental Fate of Carfentanil Oxalate in Soil and Relevant Waters

Abstract

In this study, our objective was to assess the stability and persistence of carfentanil oxalate (henceforth referred to as carfentanil) in four different soil types and six different water sources. The soil samples were spiked with a known amount of carfentanil solution and then extracted after several contact time points to track compound recovery. The water samples were spiked with a known amount of carfentanil, and aliquots were taken at different time points for analysis. The results showed that the amount of carfentanil in contact with each soil type was nearly constant during the 12 week testing period, and it accounted for 60-80 percent of the spike amount. Likewise, the water samples were stable for each time point up to 11 weeks, although only about 80 percent of the original spike could be accounted for. These results indicate that carfentanil is relatively stable in water and moist soils and immobile in the environment.
