Disaster Housing for Urban Environments

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine how government agencies can provide more effective post-disaster housing in densely populated urban areas where the infrastructure has been damaged. The thesis analyzed the problems of previous disaster housing efforts both in the United States and abroad using the PESTEL analytical model, which considers the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal concerns of a given issue. The research identified issues with the expense of post-disaster housing, the availability of land for placement of housing, deployment time, and the unmet needs of victims and those living near post-disaster housing. The thesis provides policy recommendations for government stakeholders that can address the identified issues.
