Assessing Benefits of Combining Strategic Naps with Modafinil to Improve Performance During Sleep Loss
Abstract
Performance effects due to insufficient sleep have been documented for decades. In military operations, countermeasures are put in place to offset these effects. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods are available, with strict guidelines over when and how pharmacological countermeasures may be administered. Modafinil is the current approved go-pill for all branches of services, and is the only one approved for Navy operations. The current study was designed to determine if the combination of the allowable prescribed dose of 200mg modafinil and a 2-hr nap would be better than a nap alone. Two hypotheses were tested in this study: 1) modafinil would decrease sleep inertia effects immediately upon awakening from a nap; and 2) the combination of modafinil with a nap would benefit performance and subjective alertness better than a nap alone. The study additionally explored the effect of modafinil on the naps sleep architecture.
