A Road Ahead for Adaptive Training Technology

Abstract

There is no single silver-bullet technique that is going to solve every training issue. Training technology does not have to be adaptive in every aspect, and we need to be selective in targeting when and how to adapt to reap the most gains. We need to lay out the space of potential adaptive strategies and to indicate the conditions under which their use produces significant gains in learning outcomes, compared with nonadaptive approaches. If we do not know this, then we need carefully controlled, systematic research to fill in our knowledge gaps. We should also broaden our ideas about where adaptive techniques might provide benefits to areas beyond traditional training, such as in real-time performance support and mission rehearsal tools. Moreover, we should broaden our conception of adaptability to include not just adapting to students, but also adapting to changing training needs.
