Assessment of Military Nurse Practitioner Role Transition: Preliminary Findings

Abstract

The overall objective of this study is to characterize the process and perceived obstacles of successful role transition for new military nurse practitioners (NPs). Background: Advanced practice role transition has been described as stressful for those transitioning from registered nurse to nurse practitioner (NP). The change from expert nurse to novice NP poses many challenges. Individual and organizational factors have shown to influence role transition experience. Military nurses transitioning to the NP role share similar challenges, however they also have the added responsibility of military officership. There is a lack of research about NP role transition experience and no research about military NPs role transient. The lack of evidence-based literature regarding the transition experience of military nurses is the basis of this study. Methods: Data collection occurs via a web-based survey. Air Force (AF) cohort data collection commenced following approval from the AF Survey Office. Participant responses are sought at 6 months, one year, 18 months and two years post-graduation. The instrument is currently being routed through the Department of Defense (DoD) survey approval process. Once completed, data collection will begin for Army and Navy cohorts. Descriptive statistics and correlations will be used to report features and distributions of variables measured. Preliminary Findings: 41 newly graduated/accessed AF NPs were provided the opportunity to participate Fall 2017. Results from first two time points regarding respondents perception of stress, depressive symptoms and anxiety, as well as responses to items regarding social and organizational work conditions will be presented. Implications for Military Nursing: This study is the first to investigate role transition process of military NPs.
