Teamwork and Communication Methods and Metrics for Human-Autonomy Teaming

Abstract

Communication is at the center of the most-critical research and developments in human autonomy teaming (HAT) because it provides insights into how information is gathered, exchanged, and utilized by the team. The goal of this report is to discuss HAT applications of models, theories, and methodologies in existing literature on teamwork and communication to inform the development of a new method for capturing team communication in real time. To reach this end, this report first highlights the challenge areas in the development of communication in HAT specific to the research areas of humans understanding autonomy, autonomy understanding humans, and joint human autonomy teamwork. Then we review models and theories of communication and teamwork to clarify current research needs related to communication in HAT. We follow this by reviewing methods for analyzing communication: qualitative coding, computational approaches, network analysis, and voice analysis. In discussing these methods, we additionally highlight their strengths and shortcomings. Finally, to address some of those shortcomings, we present a new tool for capturing team communication in real time, called Realtime Flow, Event, and Coordination Tool (REFLECT), and discuss the HAT applications of REFLECT.
