We Can Do What's Easy or We Can Do What's Right: A Preliminary Report on Leaders Perspectives on Ethical Failures in the United States Marine Corps

Abstract

In December 2013, LLI and CAOCL-TRG initiated a joint research project, entitled Ethics and Marines,1 to gain insight into Marine-relevant ethical issues, topics, and problems. The project grew out of the 2012 Ethics Stand Down initiated by then-Commandant General James Amos, which was designed to address a lack of discipline and accountability by Marines and leadership, as evidenced by highly publicized, embarrassing events in Afghanistan.2 Dr. Wendy Chambers, a contracted researcher at CAOCL-TRG, and Dr. Tripodi were members of the teams delivering ethics training during the stand down.
