19th International Conference on Solid State Protonic Conductors (SSPC-19): Abstracts

Abstract

The 19th International Conference on Solid State Protonic Conductors took place on Sept.16-21, 2018 at the Stoweflake Conference in Stowe, Vermont. The meeting attracted 104 delegates from around the world and featured 1 plenary presentation, 4 historical keynote presentations, 6 keynote talks, 15 invited talks, and 22 contributed talks and 56 poster presentations. In keeping with past SSPC conferences, SSPC-19 had a scientific program with the usual broad range of presentations on both theoretical and experimental investigations of soft and hard materials. Unique to this SSPC meeting however, was a particular focus on hydroxide ion (OH) conducting materials. The quint essential features of hydrogen bonding and proton 'hopping' are shared in many alkaline systems exhibiting OH transport. Two unique sessions were also organized during the week. On the second evening of the conference, a special "Popcorn Session" occurred where 7 graduate students each gave a brief 8 minute presentation on their research work. The time was rigorously enforced and this encouraged the students to be supremely organized and selective in their material. On the Wednesday morning of the conference four historical perspective presentations (each 1 hour) were given by senior and distinguished members of the SSPC community. In many ways these were the highlight of the conference as they sought to trace the history of the entire field proton conductors, a posthumous tribute to individuals who made important contributions, and a case study of how progress in science is made through falsification.
