Computer Aided Decoding of Brain-Immune Interactions in Gulf War Illness (GWI): A Joint Embedding on Brain Connectomic and Immunogenetic Markers
Abstract
We employed a novel classification framework based on a combination of brain connectomics and immuno-genetic approaches of Gulf War Illness (GWI) to develop novel computer-based diagnostic systems and features. In this project year, we confirmed that veterans with GWI have clear group specific microstructural alteration in limbic/paralimbic regions compared to GW veterans without illness. Multimodal imaging measures in the highlighted cortical regions had important role in improving classification performances. Our results also showed that self-report mile Traumatic Brain Injury, depression or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptom profiles have strong diagnostic values for classifying neurological deteriorations in GW veterans when they combined to the Kansas criteria. In the following project year, we will continue to update subject data and work on building the classifiers to enhance the classification outcomes.
