Review of Autonomy/Agent System Algorithms and Techniques to Inform Operator Interface Design

Abstract

While the introduction of automated systems in complex work environments has had a significant impact on increasing the productivity and efficiency across many work domains, these impacts were not achieved without unintended consequences. The automation landscape is littered with countless stories of automation mishaps, many attributed to ineffective interfaces between automated systems and the operators that control them. Advances in artificial intelligence and the development and incorporation of autonomous systems in work environments pose similar challenges, with potentially significant consequences.
