Gridded Meteorological Messages (METGMs) with User-Selected Parameters from GRIB2 Formatted Model Output Files

Abstract

Several NATO nations use the gridded meteorological (MET) message (METGM) for MET support to artillery and for other applications. Software available at NATO can produce a METGM from certain numerical weather prediction output, but at present only for European and derivative models such as the Unified Model (UM) from the UK and the US Air Forces Global Air Land Weather Exploitation Model (GALWEM), which is a variant of the UM. This report briefly describes a software package that converts Global Forecast System data into a METGM that also may be used for GALWEM output files. Text files produced as part of the process are potentially useful for model evaluation. The software is a research and evaluation tool, and is not recommended for application in an operational system.
