Follistatin: A Potential Anabolic Treatment for Re-innervated Muscle

Abstract

Follistatin is a possible anabolic treatment for denervation atrophy induced muscle weakness following prolonged denervation. Follistatin DNA treatment seemed to have both anabolic and neurotrophic effects when administered after nerve repair following prolonged (6-month) temporary denervation. Follistatin protein treatment was not associated with improved recovery though both protein and DNA treatments stimulated regenerative satellite cells. These observations are encouraging and warrant further investigation.
