Neurovascular Changes Associated with Olfactory Deficits in Early Parkinson's Disease

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate neurovascular changes related to the olfactory deficits in early PD patients to develop novel biomarkers for PD. We plan to focus on these Specific Aims: 1) neurovascular abnormalities associated with olfactory deficits in early PD patients; 2) dynamic changes in neurovascular and metabolic parameters during olfactory stimuli in early PD patients; and 3) the progression of such neurovascular abnormalities across different stages of PD patients. During the first year, we were able to get IRB approval for our study, implement and optimize MRI technologies on an upgraded 8-channel 7T MRI system, and start data acquisition and analysis. Specifically, after analyzing data from several healthy control subjects, we found that the duration of odor stimulation in fMRI experiments has critical effects on the functional responses in the brain, which has not been carefully characterized in human 7T studies. We believe that this finding will have a significant impact on the current project as well as future studies in the field.
